The Second City Runs on Coins
The Chicago Police Department is the second largest municipal police force in the country. The Chicago Fire Department is one of the oldest and largest in the nation. Between them sit hundreds of districts, firehouses, academy classes, and special units, and coin culture runs through all of it: graduation coins for academy classes, station coins, promotion coins, retirement and memorial coins.
Then come the unions. Chicago is one of the most heavily organized cities in America, and union locals here treat their number and seal the way a military unit treats its insignia. A local’s coin marks apprenticeship classes, anniversaries, and the members who put in decades.
And the conventions never stop: McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America, fills the city with visiting crews and companies all year, every one of them a team that wants something worth handing across a table.
Navy Graduation Coins at Great Lakes
Just north of the city, Naval Station Great Lakes is the United States Navy’s only boot camp. Every sailor in the Navy graduates there, week after week, all year long, with families coming in from around the country for the Pass-in-Review graduation ceremony.
That makes Chicagoland the center of one of the strongest coin traditions in the military: recruit division coins and graduation gifts. If you are part of a recruit division, a family group, or a veterans organization marking a graduation, send us the division details or even a rough idea. We design the artwork free, revise it until it is right, and ship it free.

What Chicago Crews Order Most
About Chicago, Illinois
Chicago is home to some of the nation’s largest and most storied police and fire departments, where the tradition of challenge coins is deeply ingrained. The city’s trade unions carry over a century of organized labor history, Naval Station Great Lakes trains every recruit in the United States Navy just up the shore, and McCormick Place hosts events that bring crews to the city from everywhere. These coins are a powerful way for units to build camaraderie, honor service, and commemorate the unique history of their precincts, firehouses, and locals.
